Over the years, a number of
strategies have proven effective in engaging youth in positive
development. The Teen R.E.A.C.H. Center has adopted these strategies as
its five core service areas:
-
Academic Assistance, which encompasses
time to receive homework help, tutoring in basic skills, and enrichment
programs that encourage creativity;
-
Life Skills Education that provides abstinence instruction from a range
of risky behaviors such as substance use, criminal involvement, violence,
and sexual activity. The Center uses Botvin’s life skills curriculum as
well as Second Step Violence Prevention in daily activities.
-
Parental Involvement so parents and guardians can meet with staff to
discuss children’s activities and participate in events that build
parent/child bonds and community involvement.
-
Positive Adult Mentors who offer participants opportunities to develop
and maintain relationships with adults through mentoring and other programs that emphasize one-on-one relationships.
-
Sports and Alternative Activities that provide safe outlets for
participants to try new skills and interest, build friendships, find their
place in a group, and gain developmentally relevant experiences. Interest
clubs, individual and team sports and skill building activities are
examples.
