WIC Children Services

Children ages birth-5 are seen every 6 months by the nurse and nutritionist at the WIC office. The children are weighed, measured and have their hemoglobin tested. The parent is asked to complete a 24 hour diet recall and food frequency list which is assessed by a nutritionist. The nutritionist offer suggestions regarding improving nutritional status and answers questions the parents have regarding nutrition.

Between the 6 month certifications, the parents or guardians of children are scheduled to attend group or individual nutrition education sessions. These sessions are scheduled one time between the 6 month certifications. The nutrition sessions are designed to provide information regarding specific nutritional risks that the children may have.

When a child reaches his or her 5th birthday, the child is no longer eligible for WIC services.

If the parent or child is in need of medical or social service, the WIC staff can refer the parent to those needed services provided by other agencies in the community.

Parents are encouraged to call the WIC staff with questions regarding childhood nutrition.
